　ジャズ　トランペッタ-、作曲家、バンドリ-ダ-

　マイク・プライス、彼はトランペッタ－、作曲家、そしてバンドリ－ダ－として日本で活動
を始め　既に２０年以上が経つことに改めて驚きを隠さない。

　彼がよく口にする言葉だが、
「当初は半年から１年、もし運がよければ１年半位、日本に居られればラッキ-だと
考えていたんだ。」
　
　彼はこんなにも日本のジャズファンとミュ－ジックビジネスが長く彼を離さないとは
初めは考えていなかったようだ。

　元々は、芸術交換留学生として日米文化交流基金の奨学金を得て来日し、日本の楽器
をジャズにとり入れるア-ト・プロジェクトに最初の一年半を費やす。

　大きな転機となったのは、既に55年以上も歴史のある、原信夫とシャ-プス＆フラッツ
のメンバ－に迎え入れてもらったことだ。

　それから現在にわたり、演奏活動を続け、ほかにも自信のクインテットとビッグバンドの
活動へと続いている。

マイク・プライス　ジャズクインテット

　日本での結成は1993年、もっとも活動自体を始めたのは1976年にさかのぼる。
　オリジナル楽曲とそれに加えてジャズの名曲を演奏している。
　バンド名「ブル－・ギタ-」としては　ロサンゼルスで１９７６年から１９８３年まで活躍。
　１９８５年にジャズ・セプテットを結成し1988年まで活躍し、有名なジャズ評論家
Leonard Feather氏より高く評価される。日本での初演奏は1989年７月２０日、
日本固有の楽器である尺八や薩摩琵琶のソロも取り入れた新しいセクステットだった。
　現在のクインテットはギタ－かテナ-・サックスをフュ－チャ－し、今までの活動を
通して発展したアンサンブルの広がりを聴かせてくれている。
　最近は演奏活動の場を広げ、東京エリアではBフラット、コットン・クラブ、モ-ション・
ブル-等で演奏している。

　初演奏は1999年１０月１日、デュ-ク・エリントン生誕100周年の年を記念しての
演奏であった。その皮切りコンサ－トは、シェ-クスピア組曲で知られる
"Such Sweet Thunder Suite " のフュ－チャ－であり、日本での演奏としては
大変珍しいものとなった。
　このオ－ケストラは、様々なプロジェクトを続けており、マイルス・デイビスと
ギル・エバンスの「ポギ-とベス」、「フランク・シナトラに捧げて」、「バディ・リッチに
捧げて」、エリントンの"Far East Suite"等は記憶に新しい。現在は歴史的名曲に
加え、マイク本人のオリジナルも交えながら更なる活動を続けている。

　マイク・プライスは、ジャズとエンタ-テイメントの世界で名高く輝かしい
形跡を残している著名人たちと演奏してきており、その経歴はまるで宝箱の
ようだ。

　秋吉敏子とル-・タバキン　ビッグバンドのメンバ－だった時、１９７３年から1983年
の間に７回来日公演があったことが、彼に日本への興味を抱かせるきっかけとなった。

　それ以前には、バディ・リッチ　バンド（1969-1970）　と　スタン・ケントン　オ-ケストラ
（1967-1968）にてファ-スト・トランペッタ-　を務めている。

　有名なバンドとのツア-は既に学生時代、ノ-ス・ウェスタン大学（イリノイ州）、
バ-クリ-音楽院（ボストン）在籍中から始めている。大学と音楽院時代の間、
1964年にはTex　Beneke　と　Modernaires　に招かれ、グレン・ミラ-の音楽を
演奏する大変貴重なヨ-ロッパツア-も経験している。

　他にも数多くのツア-や演奏を経験し、それらのものすべてが現在の演奏に
凝縮し表現されている。

Jazz Trumpeter, composer, Bandleader

　Going on nineteen years in Tokyo is still a surprise for trumpet player , composer,

and band leader , Mike Price.He often says " My original plan was to come here

for six months to a year, and maybe a year and a half if I'm lucky !"

He did not anticipate that Tokyo's jazz fans and the music business would keep him

busy this long ! Originally, arriving　on an artist exchange program cosponsored

by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S./Japan Friendship Commission,

artistic projects involving the use of Japanese instruments in a jazz setting occupied

most of the first year and a half. A big opportunity occurred when he was invited to

join Nobuo Hara and the Sharps & Flats, an established Tokyo big band with , by now,

over a 55 year history. Then, with a setting of the stage for comtinued time

in Japan, the beginning of the quintet and big band became possible.

Mike Price Jazz Quintet

　The quintet, begun in 1993, was actually a continuation of other small groups dating

back to 1976. All of the groups performed original music supplemented with famous

selections from the jazz repertoire.

Blue Guitar was active in the Los Angeles area from 1976-1983. In 1985 the Jazz Septet

was formed and was active thru 1987 attracting favorable reviews from Leonard Feather.

On July 20, 1989 was the first performance in Japan by a new sextet which

ncluded showcased soloists on indigeneous instruments, the shakuhachi and Satsuma biwa.

The current quintet, featuring either quitar or tenor sax, is an extenstion of the ensembles

which preceded it. Recently the activities of the quintet have increased with performances

at notable Tokyo venues such as B Flat, The Cotton Club, and Motion Blue !

Mike Price Modern Jazz Orchestra

　The big band had it's premier performance October 1, 1999 to commemorate

the 100th anniversary of Duke Ellington's birth.

The initial concert featured a rare performance of the "Such Sweet Thunder Suite, "

alternately known as the "Shakespearian Suite. " The orchestra's activities cotinued

with new projects such as the Miles Davis / Gil Evans " Porgy & Bess Suite,"

"Tribute to Frank Sinatra, " " Tribute to Buddy Rich, " and Ellington's " Far East Suite."

The orchestra is continuing an active performing schedule highlighting historically

important big band compositions in addition to the leader's own works.

　Mike's carrer history includeds many luminaries in jazz and the entertainment business.

The band which initiated his interest in Japan was the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band

with whom　the toured Japan seven times between 1973-1983.Prior to that Mike held the first trumpet

chair for the Buddy Rich Band and the Stan Kenton Orchestra. The beginning of his touring

with the "name bands " was actually during the college years　at Northwestern University　(Evanston, Ill)

and Berklee School of Music (Boston,Mass). In the interval between the two schools there was an invitation

to join the Tex Beneke and Modernaires for a memorable European tour to perform the music of Glenn Miller.

　There were many other engagements and tours which have contributed to the experience

witch Mike brings to every performance.

Haber llegado hace diecinueve años a Tokio, todavia sigue siendo una sorpresa para el Trompetista, compositor, y director de la orquestra, Mike Price. Mike-Price-Jazz-Quintett,

Alle Gruppen spielten eigene Kompositionen, kombiniert mit bekannten Jazz-Stücken.

“Blue Guitar” spielte von 1976 – 1983 in Los Angeles und Umgebung. In 1985 wurde daraus ein Septett,

welches ausgezeichnete Kritiken des Los Angeles- Times-Jazz-Kritikers“ Leonard Feather.

Mike-Price-Big-Band hatte ihren ersten Auftritt am 1.0ktober 1999 zur Erinnerung an den 100.

Tromba jazz, compositore, direttore d’orchestra jazz

Per Mike Price, famosa tromba jazz, compositore e direttore di orchestra, vivere a Tokyo per oltre venti anni, é ancora sorprendente. Come ama ripetere spesso, “la mia intenzione in origine era quella di venire qui per sei mesi o per un anno e, se saró fortunato, potrebbe essere anche per un anno e mezzo!”.

Una grande opportunitá gli é stata offerta quanto é stato invitato ad unirsi alla formazione di Nobuo Hara e gli “Sharps &-Flats”, una jazz band conosciuta a Toko, attualmente con piú di 55 anni di storia.

Poi, con l’attivitá regolare sulla scena, di fronte al pubblico, diventó possibile iniziare a suonare in quintetto e in una big band.

Mike Price Jazz Quintet

l quintetto, che ha iniziato a suonare nel 1993, ha seguito in effetti l’attivitá in altri gruppi piú piccoli, con origine nel 1976. Tutti i gruppi suonavano composizioni originali, supportate da un repertorio di famosi pezzi del repertorio jazz.

　Blue Guitar era un gruppo attivo nell’area di Los Angeles dal 1976 al 1983. Il sestetto jazz é stato formato nel 1985 e é stato attivo fino al 1987, ricevendo critiche favorevoli da parte di Leonard Feather.

Il 20 luglio 1989 si esibito la prima volta in Giappone il nuovo sestetto, che includeva performances individuali da parte dei solisti su strumenti tradizionali giapponesi, come il Shakuhachi e il Satsuma biwa.

Il quartetto attuale, che alterna la presenza di una chitarra a quella di un sax tenore, é una emanazione del gruppo precedente. Recentemente, le attivitá del quintetto sono state estese ed ampliate, con apparizioni presso famosi locali di Tokyo, come il B Flat, il Cotton Club ed il Motion Blue.

Проживает вот уже более двадцати лет в Токио и, что удивительно до сих пор остаётся джазовым трубачом,композитором и руководителем своей группы.

«Изначально я планировал пробыть здесь около полугода, или в лучшем случае самое долгое продержаться до года, ну а если совсем повезёт то полтора года » -как часто говорит он сам.
Он даже представить себе не мог, что музыкальный мир и джаз фаны удержат его на такой длительный срок в Японии.Изначально он прибыл в Японию, как музыкант по обмену по программе Национального Фонда Искусств совместно с Миссией дружбы Америки и Японии. Проект по использованию японских инструментов в джазе занял полтора года.Но самая большая возможность проявить себя, пришла к нему с приглашением присоединиться к одной из крупнейших джаз банд в Японии с историей существования более пятидесяти пяти лет Nobuo Hara и Sharps& Flats.Что в дальнейшем послужило толчком для создания собственной джаз банды, получившей название Mike Price Jazz Quintet (Майк Прайс Джаз квинтет).Квинтет был основан в 1993 году и явился, как бы своеобразным продолжением других маленьких групп основанных ещё в 1976 году. В 1985 году была основан Jazz Septet, выступления которого были просмотренны известным лос-анжелеским критиком Leonard Feather.

Все эти группы представляли свои собственные оригинальные композиции, дополняя выборкой из известного джазового репертуара.

爵士乐喇叭手，作曲家，乐团领导人

Mike Price、他作为一名爵士乐喇叭手，作曲家，而且是位乐团的领导人。在东京展开音乐活动，虽然已历经过20年的岁月，但仍然隐藏不住再次的惊讶。他经常说的话是“当初打算在东京居留6个月到1年，如果幸运的话，可能是1年半”。最初想也没想到，他能这样和日本的爵士乐迷们和商业音乐长久不分离。

原来他是作为艺术交换留学，取得了艺术的全国捐赠(NEA)和日米友好基金奖学金后来日本的。将研究计划日本的乐器使用于爵士乐的艺术环境上，几乎花费了他最初1年半的时间。

一个大的转机就是发生在让他加入一个成立已有55年以上历史的大乐团，原信夫和Sharps ＆ Flats的大乐团。

从那时候开始到现在，一直维持着他的演奏生涯，也一直继续着他有自信的五重奏及管弦乐团的演出活动。

于1993年在日本组成。但追朔到1976年，也就是最初这个活动本身的开始，他们除了演奏自己本身原有的创作曲之外，还加上其他著名的爵士选择曲目。

最早期的乐团名称“Blue Guitar” 从1976年到1983年为止，活跃在洛杉矶地区。

一个爵士乐七重奏组成于1985年，并且活跃到1987年。而且还取得了洛杉矶时报有名的爵士乐评论家Leonard Feather的很高评价。

1989年7月20日，在日本首次演出，在演奏会上也独奏了日本传统的乐器尺八及萨摩琵琶而成了一个新的六重奏。

现在的爵士乐五重奏，有吉他或中音萨克斯风。我们现在所能听到的合奏，是经历过各种演出活动而发展起来的一个广范围的合奏团。

最近扩大演出活动的范围，在东京地区有名的俱乐部B Flat,

Mike Price 他的经历路程就像是个百宝箱。在爵士乐和娱乐经营计划的世界里和许多享有盛名留有丰功伟绩的有名人们共同演出。

在加入秋吉敏子和Lew Tabackin 大乐团时，从1973年到1983年之间曾经和这个团来日本7次巡回表演。这也就是让他对日本发生兴趣的理由。

在这之前Mike Price 是Buddy Rich Band（1969～1970）Stan Kenton（1967～1968）这两个乐团第一把交椅的爵士喇叭手。

Le Quintet fonde en 1993 etait en fait la prolongation d autres nombreux petits groupes dont certains crees en 1976.

Chacun de ces groupes jouaient leurs compositions originales enrichies d'un selection de morceaux classiques du repertoire de jazz.

Blue Guitar se produisait dans la region de Los Angeles entre 1976 et 1983. En 1985 Le Jazz Septet fut forme et ses performances furent saluees par le critique du Los Angeles Times, Leonard Feather.

Le 20 Juillet 1989 marque les debuts d un nouveau sextet , mettant en scene des solistes sur des instruments japonais , le shakuhachi et le Satsuma biwa.

Le quintet actuel , avec soit une guitare soit un tenor saxophone ,est une extension de tous les ensembles qui l ont precede.

Recemment les activites du Quintet se sont multipliees avec des representations dans des salles de spectacle connues comme B Flat, The Cotton Club et Motion Blue .
