リッチー・コールと私（マイク・プライス）の付き合いは、
友人としてはバークリーの学生時代から、仕事仲間としては
バディ・リッチ ビッグバンドのメンバー同士として演奏
していたの時からになりますので、もうかれこれ40年近くになります。
彼は大変な熟練を重ねたミュージシャンで、その成長と今日の
アーティストとしての活躍を目の当たりにすることができ、
私はとても嬉しく思います。
彼の特筆すべき時期の一つについて、是非知って頂きたいのですが、
リッチーはバディ・リッチのビッグバンドで演奏する傍ら、
エディ・ジェファーソンとの仕事をはじめとして、全米単独行脚の
演奏旅行に回るなど一から十までコツコツとキャリアを積んだ時代が
ありました。
今ではワールドクラスのジャズミュージシャンですが、その時のこと
こそが彼の音楽のるつぼを本物にした時と言えるでしょう。
当時、全米大都市でバンドを結成しているミュージシャンたちや
スタジオミュージシャンたちは、彼が演奏に現れると、
一挙に当惑し、驚愕し、そして賞賛したといいます。
振りかえってみると、彼の人生はまるでジャック・キャロアックの
小説から抜け出てきたかのような波乱万丈な人生でした。
そして数十年、彼は世界中の聴衆の心に届く演奏盛りの時を
過ごしています。
日本でなかなか聴くことのできない彼の生演奏をこの機会に
是非、愉しんでください。

A Personal Introduction
My association with Richie Cole, both as a friend and colleague, goes back to our student days at Berklee School of Music followed by our time on the road in Buddy Rich's band.
Richie always has been the consummate musician and I have been fortunate to observe his growth to the accomplished artist he is today.
There was one very special period to which I wish to call your attention. During the years following the big bands, beginning with his work with Eddie Jefferson, continuing with his solitary traveling throughout North America, Richie was building his soloist career literally from the ground up! I believe that this important link of time, before his recognition as a world-class jazz musician, was the crucible in which his music was truly born. This phase, appearing to be the wandering jazz minstrel, simultaneously puzzled, amazed, and was admired by his musician contemporaries who were playing with established bands or pursuing studio work in the big cities! In retrospect, he appears to have stepped out of the pages of Jack Kerouac! The following decades have also blossomed, with his music now reaching audiences worldwide.
More On Richie Cole
Richie Cole was born in Trenton, New Jersey on February 29, 1948 . He first became serious about the saxophone at the age of 10 and played in many different bands and orchestras throughout his school years. In 1966 he won a full scholarship from Downbeat magazine to the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In1969 , he joined the Buddy Rich Big Band until 1971 when he went with the Lionel Hampton Big Band and the Doc Severinsen Big Band. Richie teamed up with the great Eddie Jefferson , the father of vocalize in1975 and they worked together until Eddie’s untimely death in 1979.
After that, he hit the road, traveling and living in his custom van, developing his "Alto Madness・ concept throughout the country for the next ten years before settling in San Francisco at "Alto Acres,"located in the Russian River area north of San Francisco . It was a great place to put the pieces of his many years of traveling and research together.
From here, he traveled extensively around the world, working in Australia, Japan, Africa, Finland, Russia, and throughout Europe. Richie was on the board for the National Endowment for the Arts Organization in Washington D.C. serving as the chairman of the board for one year. He was also a charter member and served on the board of the National Jazz Service Organization , also in Washington D.C. Richie Cole has recorded some fifty albums and CD's on his own, and along With the Manhattan Transfer, Bobby Enriquez , Freddy Hubbard , Sonny Stitt, Eddie Jefferson, Art Pepper, Ben Sidran, Tom Waits, Phil Woods, Boots Randolph, Bobby McFerrin, Nancy Wilson, James Moody, Ray Mantilla, Red Rodney, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, just to name a few.
In the early 90's Richie headed to the Midwest, living in Milwaukee, Chicago, and Rockford, Illinois before traveling to the Florida Keys , where he lived on his yacht in Key Largo. During this time he developed his unique new concept , the Alto Madness Orchestra. The idea of the Alto Madness Orchestra is the concept and sound of an eighteen-piece big band using only seven instruments. ( four horns) Not only does this have the big band ensemble sound, but allows plenty of room for improvisation as in a quartet setting. Richie does all the composing and arranging and, as of this date, he has over four thousand arrangements. His band has been travelling and performing at jazz festivals, clubs, and schools worldwide for the last eight years.
Richie also writes for full big bands and symphony orchestras. The Alto Madness Orchestra course, (using Richieｴｾs original material), is entering its fourth year at the University of Madrid, Spain. Richie has also organized the Alto Madness Junior Orchestra, working with children ten to sixteen years of age. They learn to perform music especially written for their capability .
Richie Cole also continues to perform with his quartet and is very active in Jazz education, doing clinics and guest performances in schools and universities world wide. He is a long time member of the International Association of Jazz Educators where he performed with his Alto Madness Orchestra at the annual convention in Long Beach, California in 2002. During his most recent tour of Tomsk, Siberia, he premiered his new jazz suite, "A Night in Siberia." It was performed by the Red Army Big Band. Richie Cole is now looking forward to the second half of his career

To commemorate the occasion we will include some music suitable for contemplating the void beyond, but we will also perform music for more earthbound tastes with some "down home Blues!" Forgive us, Hanry Mancini, but we will not be performing "Moon River!"
